What is Stress & Anxiety?

Fear or anxiety is an emotion that all human beings experience at times as a natural and

useful way to protect us from danger, or when under pressure or stressed at work or home.

When is Stress & Anxiety A Problem?

Anxiety only becomes a problem when it impacts on our lives in a negative way preventing

us from experiencing other emotions, such as joy or enabling us to function and socialise in a ‘normal’ way.

Anxiety can develop when we are uneasy or fearful about something that might happen about a future event, situation, or circumstance. There can be a variety of triggers, from a bereavement, to the loss of a job, to sometimes a trauma, or even drug usage.

Anxiety can turn into a disorder, when that worry becomes more pronounced and interferes with your normal day to day life. Many people experience periods of abnormal anxiety from time to time.

For these individuals worry and fear take over and for some this can be physically and emotionally disabling and they may benefit from medical support, changing their lifestyles to be less stressful with more rest and relaxation and by improving their diet.

A person with anxiety may feel tense with uncomfortable physical sensations, such as: trembling, a racing heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and difficulty breathing. The severe and sudden onset of such symptoms is often indicative of a panic attack.

While brief episodes of appropriate anxiety are perfectly normal during challenging situations, anxiety disorders can reoccur, and sometimes worsen over time.

Anxiety and depression can affect up to 1 in 4 people in the general population. Simply coping with day to day life can be exhausting which can have a huge impact on your relationships and your work. Counselling and therapy helps you take control of your life and helps reduce the symptoms to eventually completely overcoming the problem, so you can return to a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
