What Is Counselling & Psychotherapy
Counselling and Psychotherapy are often considered to be interchangeable therapies
that overlap in a number of ways. The key difference between the two courses of
therapeutic communication treatment lies in the recommended time required to see
benefits. Counselling usually refers to a brief treatment that centers around behaviour
patterns. Psychotherapy focuses on working with clients for a longer-term and draws
from insight into emotional problems and difficulties.
They both involve a unique, one-to-one relationship between two people who agree to meet privately and regularly for a period of time with the aim of restoring emotional well-being to the client. It is different from any other relationship as it is focused
100% on the client. It allows you a safe place to be yourself and to say what you truly feel in confidence without fear of judgment, criticism or unwanted advice.
Talking about feelings is a necessary part of therapy, which might seem strange at first, especially if you are used to bottling things up. When something is getting you down, counselling can help you gain a clearer understanding of your emotions. Feeling that these are OK allows you to deal better with whatever is in your path at this moment in time, whatever has happened in the past. A trained counsellor and psychotherapist will listen to you carefully, paying attention to the things that matter to you. When you cannot see the wood for the trees, talking to a counsellor can help you to see your own strengths, resources and opportunities you may not have seen before.
The counselling and psychotherapy relationship is a professional one and the boundaries and expectations of it are different from a friendship. The relationship is limited by the length of time of your sessions and your name, address and in-session work are held in confidence by the counsellor long after your engagement has ended.
The frequency of sessions can be arranged to suit your needs but is usually weekly at the beginning. We prefer to see clients, on the same date and time where possible and each session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes unless longer sessions have been arranged

Your first Appointment
The first assessment and consultation is FREE. This can be done over the telephone,
online or face to face. This session usually lasts about 30 - 40 minutes.
This assessment and consultation is primarily an information-gathering session. We will
ask you questions about your history and ask you to share any concerns you have. We
will discuss what your goals of therapy are. We will evaluate these concerns and arrive at
a possible, initial, diagnosis. Since diagnosis helps to guide treatment, it's an important
part of the process. It is difficult to accurately diagnose after just one session and
diagnosis may change over time as we get to know you more. We will let you know of
any potential treatment we can start to look at. Any conclusions are based on the
information you have given me. However, as we progress through treatment, other areas are likely to arise and our methods and treatment may change as a result.
You will be given some work to do before your next session and you will be given an opportunity to ask any questions that might be troubling you.
Each session will run for at least 60 minutes and, depending on the treatment, can run for up to 90 minutes. There is no extra charge should any session over run.
We also offer a student discount. Other discounts may be available. Please ask for further information.
Your future appointments will be different, to the first one, in the way that you’ve pretty much likely told me your presenting problem and maybe even discussed some goals you’d like to achieve. If we assigned you any homework or challenges, be prepared to discuss the results when you see us next time.
You will most likely sit and discuss the things that are important to you and anything relevant to achieving your therapeutic goals. Nothing big, really. Just a simple conversation between you and me, your therapist.
It may get more difficult as you experience growth and change, but your future sessions will most likely be about getting to those points. Change will come, and things will get better over time. Every case is different and we work out a programme of treatment which is bespoke to each client we are working with. It must be remembered that this is a joint effort and we are working together to achieve your therapeutic goals.
The fee for 'Counselling & Psychotherapy' is £55 per session inclusive of VAT. However our service extends to contact between sessions which most counsellors do not allow. We are happy to receive emails, texts and calls (during normal working hours) when our clients have emergency problems or are finding it difficult to cope and would like guidance. We have offers for booking a package. See below for more details) Payment can be made through PayPal online, cheque, online banking or by cash.
